Introducing Apples iPhone 12 Lineup

The latest Apple iPhone 12 lineup has landed and has the most significant design change in three years: support for high-speed 5G cellular networks and a mini model for those who feel that the increasingly large iPhones are getting too hard to hold. The new lineup of iPhones consists of four widely ranged models in design and price:

The iPhone 12

There are two new phones in Apple’s mid-range pricing; the iPhone 12 ($799) and iPhone 12 Mini ($699). There are also two additional models in a higher price range; the iPhone 12 Pro ($999) and the iPhone 12 Pro Max (1,099).

This release was the first time that Apple has made a mini model for those who like the smaller fit phones. It was also the first time that the iPhone has converted back to the original design that iPhones had before the model change with the iPhone X which (released in 2017).

The biggest focus of the iPhone 12 was its 5G’s ultra-fast network speeds that have come from Apple partnering with network carriers from all over the world. The new cellular network is supposed to have rapid speeds, up to 10 times faster than your home’s Wi-Fi. Even though these speeds sound unbelievable, we haven’t seen enough 5G coverage across the country to feel confident that those speeds are what they promise. 5G is available in only select cities, mostly larger metro areas.

The design change with this iPhone is contemporary and modern. Apple brought back its original design with up-to-date technology. The mid-range iPhones still have two cameras, wide and ultra-wide. Pros still have three cameras, wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto. The higher range of iPhone cameras are mainly designed for photographers and influential people.  Although the wide cameras now have a larger aperture for better low light photos.

For the first time ever, on the front-facing camera and time-lapse videos, Apple has added a night mode which allows you to take photos and lapse videos without flash. The most significant changes are within the Pro models. They now have a lidar scanner, which can sense depth by shooting out light beams into space. The scanner was designed for augmented-reality experiences. The depth data allows us to automatically focus faster. The Pros are also capable of capturing, editing, and shooting high dynamic range Dolby Vision video at 60 frames per second; if you don’t know what that means the Pros are probably not for you. The actual design of the phones has a more boxy look and flat edges instead of rounded edges. On all models, screens are promised to be more durable and able to survive bigger drops than its predecessor.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max

One main thing about the iPhone 12 lineup that has customers arguing about is the charging and accessories that come in the box. The newest iPhones come with no headphones and no charging brick. They only include a USB-c lightning cable.  However, Apple is influencing buyers to use magnet chargers which Apple has named MagSafe Chargers. This charger allows you to lay the phone on the charging circle without plugging it in. Many people love this feature.

Buyers and people that are interested in buying the iPhone are upset with the fact that the phones come with no headphones and no charging brick. Apple says they want their buyers to “bring their own brick.” As crazy as that sounds, the company says this decision and its impact is, “equivalent to removing 450,000 cars from the world per year.” Yes, this  is a major change if Apple’s statistics are correct. However if you have never purchased an Apple product, this is a major marketing trick for Apple to bring in some extra money.

When it comes to your phone you need it to have an excellent  battery to get your day to day tasks done. This is an area where the iPhone 12 line up has nominal improvements. This raises concerns for customers, as a 5G connectivity may require more battery life than the most commonly used 4G network. Apple states that the iPhone 12 has the same 17 hours of video playback, and 65 hours of audio playback, as the iPhone 11 had. The Pro models are stated to have the same battery life as the iPhone 11. The iPhone 12 mini has the least amount of battery life since it is a smaller phone in general. Apple says the Mini only gets up to about 10 hours of streaming video and 15 hours of video playback.

From what we know about the iPhone 12 lineup, there are some significant upgrades that people are loving, and there are some downfalls that customers think could have been improved. In my opinion, Apple only targeted certain groups of people with this iPhone release. People who feel they want a smaller phone with premium features, people who are big on photography and care about a more visually appealing picture and video, and for those who live around a 5G networking tower and want to use their location as an advantage. However, we won’t be able to know for certain if the iPhone 12 and its lineup is what Apple promised until the people try them for themselves. The iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro will be available for purchase on October 23rd. The iPhone 12 Mini and the iPhone 12 Pro Max won’t be available until November 16th. Will you be purchasing the iPhone 12 or other phones in its lineup? Or have prices spun out of control and you will just roll with what you have?
